The Harlan County High School Radio Club provides a place where students learn Morse code, get their radio license and operate school events such as football games. The club also hosts its own school events such as ‘CQ Santa’ during which students dress up as elves and invite kids to write letters and talk to Santa Claus on the radio.
The club is led by Harlan County High School math and computer science teacher Garrett Bolin. He describes the club as, “an opportunity for all students to learn about wireless communication as well as open doors for careers as well as college opportunities for multiple paths of technology.”
Many students describe radio club as a fun and educational experience.
HCHS senior Payton Hobbs describes it as “the best club in the school by far.”
Club photographer Katherine Epling, a junior, states, “I really enjoyed last year’s trip to Cumberland Falls, and I encourage people to join so they can experience the fun as well.”
Other club members include Bani Chaudhari, Jessica Witt and Harlie Peterson.
