Being an Appalachian can mean many different things for different people. To me, being from a place like this is something that I am proud of. There are things that I think people can only learn from living here themselves and experiencing it on their own. One thing I enjoy about being from here is being able to see how close most of the families are. Family is such an important part of life here and I genuinely am thankful for that. Even if someone doesn’t have a close relationship with their family, another family will most likely take them in and take care of them. I have learned here that my family will always be there for me no matter what. I also know that if my family can’t be there for me then my friends will. The community around you will be the biggest thing that will affect you when you are here.
Another thing I love about being from the Appalachian area is the scenery. I love growing up around the trees and flowers blooming. The night sky is one of my favorite things to look up and see every night. It is honestly something you can’t get in other place. I remember running around the yard when I was little while catching fireflies in a jar. I would love to look around and watch them all light up and fill the spaces around me. I love going fishing with my dad and hunting with him also. When I was younger, we would always look like twins with our matching camo outfits. The forests are honestly something that looks like they came straight from the TV, you cannot get better than that.
The Appalachian culture in Harlan County is so strong and I’m blessed to have been able to grow up here. The culture is so rich with love and hard work ethic that it has been passed down from generation to generation. The small stores you find on the corners of streets that are supported by local business thrive with life. I love trying to find new examples of my community because it makes me feel even more proud to be here. I hope to raise my kids one day with the same work ethic and love for their community that I have.
